Microdosing by definition is the action or practice of taking or administering very small amounts of a drug in order to test or benefit from its physiological action while minimizing undesirable side effects.
When you microdose you take around 5%-10% of a normal “trip” dose of a psychedelic substance. This dose is designed to be sub-perceptual, you will not trip, hallucinate, or feel high, but you should feel a “glow.”
It may sound scary to take a hallucinogenic substance, even in small quantities, but we promise you won’t feel much if anything at all. A “trip dose” varies depending on the person, but generally ranges from 1-5 grams, whereas a microdose ranges from 100-250mg. So why are we taking such small quantities if they’re not causing us to feel anything? That’s the best part, they’re working behind the scenes! There have been many studies conducted in recent years that have shown positive results from microdosing including improved focus, better mood, higher energy, and creativity.
While it is difficult to test the effects of microdosing because psilocybin is not yet legal, there are many small studies being done that encourage microdosers to self-report their experiences. In a study done by Compass Pathways, psilocybin therapy yielded positive results in patients with treatment-resistant depression. This therapy was a combination of a high dose of psilocybin paired with psychological support from specially trained therapists.
This doesn’t mean that microdosing can cure depression, however, the results coming from these studies reveal that doses of the drug have been shown to help people cope with depression and anxiety.
So you’re interested in microdosing but you don’t know where to start? We’ve got you! Our favourite method to dose is with the Fadiman protocol. Named after Dr.James Fadiman, this is a routine that suggests a three-day rotation. We suggest starting your microdose journey on a day that you can spend doing something that makes you feel at ease in a space where you feel calm. On days 2 and 3 you will not take a microdose, microdosing every day is not recommended as your body can develop a tolerance to psilocybin, resulting in a diminishing return on the positive effects. On the 4th day, you will take another dose, and repeat this cycle for 12 weeks before taking a break to reflect. For the best results, its important to remember that microdosing is a tool that works best with other tools, such as journaling, exercise and meditation.
